To Be an American Sweetheart

I was listening to a sports radio program...and i heard them gushing over Melanie Oudin and how she was this unseeded surprise start. Now from the reporting i thought she was blowing cats out but that was a bit of hyperbole anyways thats neither here no there the fact that and unseeded player is beating the best is great.

So i decided to read up on it and i ran across the following article found here in the LA Times

On top of the Second page you find this phrase...

"Mary Jo Fernandez crowned Oudin "America's Sweetheart" and the cameras swung to Oudin's box and Oudin's twin sister, Katherine, sobbing in joy."

So i found another article which brings me to the point of this post...

The article compares Oudin to the The Williams Sisters, Venus and Serena, and then References Mary Jo Fernandez comment that Oudin "I think she's a breath of fresh air," the same Mary Jo Fernandez that called Oudin "America's Sweetheart".

Now i cannot ever recall Venus Or Serena Williams ever being referenced as America's Sweetheart. I cannot ever recall the overt sports media gushing over Venus or Serena when they came on the tennis scene in the manner that Oudin is being gushed over... Why is the media so excited to see her take over the mantle of the Williams sisters who are still playing at the highest level and really given the longevity of tennis players still have many years left of high level play.

Hmm...I wonder exactly what it takes to be an American Sweetheart
Is it that Oudin happens to be a 5'6 petite white girl from Georgia
Its seems the sports media and James Jefferies have something in common
