Trading One Oppressive Force for Another.
so in my travels in black nationalism, radical/revolutionary thought, and cultural re-discovery elitism once again rears its ugly head.
for some reason if one does not remind you of this
or this
then some how they love themselves and their people less than those that do. No matter where our brothers and sisters are in their journey they still are our brothers and sisters. Whether their hair is permed or kinky, whether they rep the red black and green or the red white and blue. Often times us enlightened folk tend to spend more time looking down on our less aware family members then bringing them into the light.
for example if a black woman perms her hair i know many of us would say that she is trying to imitate a white standard of beauty. Furthermore many of us would also say that is done out of a subconscious self hate the dominant culture impresses upon our people through overt and covert means because it believes whatever that is not like it is in some way deficient.
now those of us that are aware of this, generally won't straighten our hair as an act of defiance and will embrace our hair the way it is naturally (locs, braids, fros, et cetera). Now we take this as a source of pride, however what we must not do is denigrate our own for not doing the same.
We fight/advocate/protest/yell/cuss/scream for freedom which means the ability to choose to be whatever we want to be. In fighting one oppression we cant replace it with our own. lets be mindful of that ok
