On Morehouse

ok im sure all of you have heard the recent dress code changes at Historic HBCU Morehouse. Where they banned sagging, pajamas, going around barefoot, sunglasses in class, and cross-dressing in the classroom and on campus including events. Whats more is that it was implemented by the students.

Now I've had time to think about it and i applaud the Morehouse men to take some initiative in this matter. There is such a thing as appropriate and inappropriate dress. You go college to receive an education part of that education should be how to present yourself in a professional manner and to me the Classroom is a place of business. The real uproar about this is coming from the LBGTQ community because of the crossdressing ban.

I dont know much about the politics or the mind set of a person who cross dresses or trans persons however it seems contradictory to me for a person to present themselves as a woman however use their biological status as a male to their advantage. Morehouse is a private all male institution with quite a well respected and storied history that is very important to Morehouse. To attend a person has to declare themselves as male. I think its a lil bit unreasonable to demand you be allowed to express yourself as a female when you signed up to attend an All Male school.

That doesn't make sense to me. I hope to have some members of the LBGTQ community come and help explain this.

I dont like the campus wide ban i think those things should apply to the classroom only instead of the whole campus at all times. A person still has the right to be themselves in their own space.

but i welcome comments on this one

I hadn't even heard about this until I read your blog. Thank you for posting! This is definitely an interesting situation.

From what I heard, Morehouse has a very LARGE GLBT community, so it's very surprising to me that this would have even gotten past a student gov't meeting.

College is avenue that many people use to finally be able to express themselves and honestly someone ELSE's dress should have nothing to do with it. I think the question would definitely be maturity if you are SOOO distracted by some else's dress that it affects how you are learning in a class.

Most people at my alma mater had problems even MAKING it to class.(But that's neither here nor there, lol) Who CARES what THEY choose to wear while they are paying THEIR hundreds of thousands of dollars?

So I guess MY issue is that it was SUCH an issue in the first place!

personally i think this has more to do with the reputation of Morehouse than anything else...but the Gay community at Morehouse approved the measure 24-3. Its alot of these outside sources making a huff saying it is discriminatory. I understand that but there are gay and straight cross dressers and i dont feel the classroom is appropriate for that.

I am also glad you posted this, as I read about it on Sunday and have been discussing this issue with several of my friends since first reading it.

Morehouse has also banned wearing do-rags and hats in buildings as well. honestly I applaud the Morehouse men for choosing to ban such dress. with the exception of the cross-dressing, its about time people of our age learn how to dress appropriately. at this time in our lives we should be preparing ourselves for the future, and hopefully, if you're in college, you're going to get a job in the real world where sagging jeans and do-rags are unacceptable.

as far as my position on cross-dressing...i agree with you Isaac. if you are going to be claiming yourself as a male to go to an all male private school, should you be allowed to wear females clothing? now don't get it wrong, I do not mind if anyone cross-dresses, nor do am i against anything the LBGTQ community represents as i believe everyone is entitled to make their own decisions in life. however, being that Morehouse is all male institution, it is semi-contradictory for someone that cross-dresses to attend. and I also agree with that it should not be banned on the entire campus, but it seems reasonable to ban cross-dressing in the classroom as it can be a cause for disruption for others there to learn.

I may seem like I am completely against the cross-dressing, but I am not. I just understand (a little) that the policy is appropriate.

Hmm...so if only 12.5% of Morehouse's representative gay community disapprove...and one could safely assume that less than that are actual cross dressers (let's say 10%) what's the big deal? 50 boys wear dresses and heels ever so often. If it doesn't interfere with the learning ability of other 20 something year old boys then what's the issue?

HBCUs are oh so up tight.
