It didn't have to go down like this...
Police Brutality?
Most likely...yes.
Avoidable situation?...absolutely
The facts: The Elderly lady had knife in her hand and was approaching the officer and was asked to put the knife down. For whatever reason the lady did not put the knife down and the officer disarmed her forcefully. According to police procedure the officer did her job.
Everybody knows if you walk up on a officer with a weapon they are going to respond. Particularly when you consider the fact that the Police go to work everyday with the understanding they might go home in a bodybag. Its them 1st suspect 2nd especially when they are operating in what proves to be a hostile environment. Furthermore if you view the police as an oppressive force that will assault and harass you merely because they have the power to do so what makes you think they wont slam an elderly woman who has a weapon.
But again this was entirely avoidable.
1. The lady should have put the knife down. Granted I don't know the context of the situation or whether the elderly lady could hear or was in a good state of mind but assuming that the lady could hear and understand the directions of the police, she should have put the knife down. Even in the event she decided she was gonna stand up to the corrupt police power structure (and im so very serious about that), given the age and strength difference why would she bring a knife to a gunfight. If your going to be a soldier we need you to be alive.
2. Why didnt anyone stop her? There were plenty of people who could have intervened and it was obvious from the onset that this was going to be a train wreck. The folk filming seemed to be more concerned with whether or not their video was going to be on the news than stopping the situation from happening. A man in the background can be heard saying "..slam me like that, Please slam me like that". I was like its way too late to break bad now the damage has been done. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
Its a tragedy all the way around
