Inappropriate Blackness: Why I Can't Support Tyler Perry
So I'm in class today discussing black pain specifically that of women. So the Professor plays a clip from Diary of A Mad Black Woman written by Tyler Perry. A Male Classmate express his inability to support Tyler Perry to which i agreed and started a bit of an uproar.
Now Tyler Perry's work does a wonderful job in dealing with the pain and problem within the black community. I know several people men and women that have found healing through Tyler Perry's work and i respect that tremendously. However, as a black man I cannot support Tyler Perry or any other individual who participates in being a minstrel.
Yes, you read that correctly Tyler Perry is a modern day minstrel.
Perry defines himself as Christian so i assume he's heterosexual, he is over 6 ft, black and MALE. And Tyler Perry rose to Fame and Money by playing an over the top clownish though well meaning WOMAN who serves as the conscience of the characters in his plays. I have a problem with that because it emasculates black men.
If i put on a dress, make up and a wig i would be considered effeminate at the very least. But because Tyler Perry does it for the positive and uplifting purposes in addition to making him rich its accepted without question and that is not okay. To make matters worse Perry's popularity has catapulted him and his work into the spotlight where this emasculation of the black is show to the world as acceptable. Not to mention that fact that Madea is a complete and total clown. For all intents and purposes Tyler Perry owes his fame and fortune to being man that dresses up like a woman.
so when you throw into a black man, emasculation, Madea's over the top clownish behavior, and the fact that his success is predicated on being a woman on stage you get a minstrel. I simply cant support that.
And the worst part is he even supports more minstrels.
Is the resemblance not enough for you? This character can't even speak proper english and this is what you want to world to see about black people. Here some clips for you to show you what im talking about.

Now mind you these are ALL BLACK productions run by Tyler Perry's Studio. But because its a black man being successful we let the wrong slide. Or maybe its because in order to challenge stuff like this we have to address how we reflect these things in our own lives. Meaning if this is wrong then the stuff in our life that mirrors this is wrong as well. Its my experience that people dont like to do that.
But I'm Different
I Cannot and Will Not Support Tyler Perry
