We, the members of BlackPlanet.com, the world's largest online community for African-Americans and people of African descent everywhere, are outraged at the recent publication of a racist cartoon in the pages of the New York Post, a daily newspaper owned and operated by one of the largest media corporations in the world, News Corporation.
The cartoon, created by Sean Delonas, depicts a dead chimpanzee, just shot dead by two white police officers who exclaim: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."
According to the editors at the Post, this cartoon plays off the recent, sensationalized shooting of an actual chimpanzee in Connecticut.
But given that this cartoon is displayed one page after a picture of President Barack Obama; given the random connection made to Obama's recently-signed economic stimulus plan; given the editorial animosity of the New York Post to Obama; and given the racist, bigoted history of the cartoonist, Mr. Delonas; it's very easy to infer that the Post and the cartoonist are likening American's first Black president to an ape.
The African-ape comparison is unconscionable, a centuries' old cliche, a favorite of white supremacists everywhere. So, too, is the threat of police violence and brutality against African-Americans. So, for that matter, is the specter of assassination of an American president.
And whether the editors and cartoonists meant to make these comparisons, or were merely comfortable riding the edge, we declare that this is inexcusable, intolerable conduct in a multicultural society.
The New York Post and Mr. Delonas are entitled to their "free speech." We are also entitled to protest, with our voices, our bodies and our pocketbooks, if necessary.
The era for this kind of "humor" has passed. We stand alongside well- meaning Americans of all races and ethnicities to condemn this cynical, backward, racist cartoon, and its publisher.
We demand an apology from the News Corporation and the New York Post.

Mentally oppressed people think that this is a racist cartoon. The democrat congress and senate are being depicted as chimpanzees, not obama. If someone wants to call obama a monkey, then so be it, but the cartoon doesn't. People that want to cast stones and not reasonably think will jump to conclusions, and they are the real racists.
It's still the USA. Freedom of speech, offensive or not. Who says he not a white American or just a plain American, he is still the president and open to criticism. It as just a cartoon intrpret it in any way you wish. Let's get real.
For the NAACP to call that cartoon racist is completely foolish. For one, the cartoon is clear satire on an event that happened the previous day, the shooting of a chimp that mauled a woman. Second, there is no indication at all that the monkey was even a portrayal of Obama. When I first saw the cartoon, I saw the monkey as representative of Congress, since Congress drafts all legislation. I am sure however, that most American's have no idea of this fact and instead think Obama is being portrayed, despite the fact the monkey is clearly not a caricature of him. I am extremely fed up with the NAACP and the like seeing racism in everything and doing everything in their power to stir controversy. Its dumb controversies like this that make race still in issue in this country. Yes, the problem of race is not completely solved, but the NAACP is doing nothing but make the problem worse. Its time they stop seeing racism in everything and move on to more relevant issues. I, as an individual of minority descent, am ashamed at what the NAACP is doing.
well jeffery/James/Adrian
i have to disagree. because while i picked up on the monkey=democrats thing
the fact remains that stimulus plan has been linked most heavily with President Obama. Given the historical fact that blacks were often referred to as monkeys and Delonas' history of being blatantly offensive to gays black and other minorities in addition to the fact that the New York Post is a tabloid that earns its keep off of controversy. I find it reasonable to believe that they knew exactly what they were doing This was over the line for me.
Yes, Lets critize President Obama. Im all for it. But that cartoon was wrong in my opinion. And alot of people happen to agree. For once i think the NAACP was on the ball wit this one.
