well a poor economy hits harder the lower you go and effects things you traditionally dont think about. Poor economy ---> People can't afford representation ---> Workload increase for public defenders ---> Quality of representation drops ---> Innocent People in Jail (if indeed your "innocent"). So that means your choosing between a speedy trial or good representation.
The social inequity here is that poor are gonna be more effected by this than anyone. The poor deserve the same justice that rich do. But as long as money can buy quality that will be the exception more than it is the rule
Or
because in this country you cant just throw people in jail without a fair trial (lets pretend the USA PATRIOT ACT doesnt exist) if they cant get representation because the public defenders are too busy and if the state/local gov't can afford to contract more public defenders to handle the load people could go scot free. Not an attractive solution.
