The DNC 08
Started off a little sloppy ended strong very strong but lets start at the beginning
So before the DNC 08 kicked off and notice that the polls showed the gap between Obama and McCain was closing to within one point + or - 2% (which means its a dead heat) in a political environment that clearly favors the Democratic party.
I felt that Obama needed to do three things within this Convention
1. Define himself as a politician. We know all about Obama as a person and the principals he stands for. The media has been in love with the dude since the '04 convention. But as time goes by his preacher's eloquence and charisma has grown to be a little stagnant because he did not clearly define the change he has promised to be about particularly in the areas of the economy, environment, the war, and social spending. IMO this has been a major cause in why this race is all of a sudden close. Not that McCain has been much better he has just been more specific. For example when McCain was asked about the dependence of foreign oil he said we would drill offshore and in reserves. Now if you research that, the drilling wouldn't really pay off for several years and even if it did have any immediate impact its a short term solution or a long term problem. All Obama said was that it was a short-term solution. A lot of the public felt like he didn’t care and *Insert elitist jab here*.
2. Obama must win over disgruntled Hilary Rodham Clinton voters (HRC). Something like 20-50 percent depending on the poll as either not voting or voting republican just cause HRC took the L in the primaries. The presidency is a Republican dominated office. The Dems are going to need every vote they can get.
3. Fully assume the mantle of the middle class. This is really apart of #2 however because of the magnitude of this task I gave it is own number. The middle class as hurting as they are will vote republican and for Republican trickle down economic polices and hope some of the tax cuts will swing their way if Obama doesn't show them that he cares and that his tax polices aren’t going to hurt them.
Night One
HRC gave Obama "full throated" (lol no fellatio joke here) endorsement of Obama. Now whether it was genuine not isn’t really important. HRC still had a political future to preserve in 2016 or if Obama loses this race 2012. Her remarks urged unity in the party this that and the other.
Night Two
Bill Finished the alley oop I support Obama pass from his wife and called upon his 8yrs of White House experience that Obama Was Ready to be the President and most importantly the Commander and Chief.
*Now at this point I’m thinking this convention has been all about the Clintons. I coulda swore Obama won the nomination wtf.*
Beau Biden comes in with a great emotional appeal in his introduction of his father "Regular" Joe Biden (with a guy named Barack Obama at the top of the ticket his name better be Joe). Joe comes in and does exactly what vice presidents are expected to do. Attack. He tears into McCain all while saying "...I know John, He's my friend..." lending legitimacy to his attacks and talking up Obama. Another thing I noticed Joe doing was dropping "catholic" expressions and mention his mother's full name Catherine Eugenia Finnegan Biden (Irish maybe?) to be the approachable tough talking "regular Joe". It remains to be seen if it’s going to work however, finally the attention is on the Obama/Biden instead of the Clintons
Night Three
GUT CHECK TIME. Not one SINGLE thing that I felt needed to be talked about in this convention had been and I was a little bit worried.
Obama hits the stage after 10 minutes of clapping he starts. He starts in talking about his origins (to dispute the elitist thing). Does the "Yes We Can" thing and attacks Bush's policy failures then references Hurricane Katrina and middle class woes as products of that policy failure. Call McCain more the same because of his senate voting record (voted with the party 90-95 percent of the time...as if senate votes matter for anything). Rips McCain again for his support for big corporate tax breaks and his non middle class friendly health plan.
"Its not that McCain doesn't care about the American people he just doesn't know them"
Damn. Shit. Fuck. I mean when you lose count on how many houses you own I think that might be accurate lol.
Obama goes on to reference Bill Clinton's presidency where 23 million jobs were created and contrasts it against the jobs and wages lost in the Bush Administration. Then says it is the job of government to do what individuals cannot do for themselves. Such as
Invest in schools and services that insure Equity of opportunity a tax code that rewards workers, No tax breaks to companies that go overseas (they rob the us market of jobs), No or cut (cant remember forgot to write down which) capital gains tax for small business, cut taxes for 95 percent of working families, a 10 year plan to end oil dependency from middle east (yeah I don't know how the hell he's going to do that but it sounded good), Invest in clean coal, tap natural gas, develop safe Nuclear Power, and put 150 billion towards renewable energy sources (wind, solar, biofuels) over the next 10yrs which will create 5 million new jobs. Obama also said he wants to pay teachers better and offer more support but raise standards and accountability (again I'm waiting to see his plan to do that). For the middle class develop affordable healthcare, lower premiums, and stopping the HMO's from discriminating against sick folk trying to get health care. As well as protecting pensions, social security and equal pay for equal work.
In addition to closing corporate loopholes and streamlining the bureaucracy.
For his foreign Policy plan he wanted to mend broken diplomatic relationships with nations like France and Germany and renew direct diplomacy to combat Russian and Iranian aggression and nuclear proliferation.
*Here comes my favorite part*
Obama emphasized the strengthening of the family structure and individual and mutual responsibility and a Renewing (are you getting the theme of change yet) our sense of common purpose. We can have the 2nd amendment but keep Ak-47 out of the hands of gang members. People may not agree on abortion but we can all do something to stop unwanted pregnancies.
Ending his speech and the DNC 08 Obama References the American Promise. The Spirit that says if we work hard enough anything is possible. This is the same spirit that brings people from all over the world to our shores and makes Our Country the best country in the world. Heavily referencing MLK Jr. Obama ends out his speech "We Must Pledge Once More To Walk Forward".
Looks like the '04 Obama is back
